Why choose the "Outdoor Capital of the UK" to come cycling?
- It's one of those places that does exactly what it says on the tin
- some of the most spectacular scenery in the country
- quiet roads
- unending forest track to explore
- single track trails
- a world class downhill and a exciting event calendar
After all, the UCI (International cycling union) has chosen Fort William to host the 2007 World Championships - why not follow in the footsteps of the best?
But biking in Lochaber isn't all about the longest downhill or the most challenging cross country. It's certainly part of it and with The Witches Trails in Leanachan Forest and the Wolftrax at Laggan among others there is enough to keep the most demanding rider occupied. On the other hand if what you want is a gentle loch side ride taking in the grandeur of the scenery and enjoying the wildlife then there is enough to keep you happy for years!
There are trails which last a couple of hours along the Caledonian Canal (no hills guaranteed!), cycle trails around Glen Nevis, which follow the base of Britain's highest mountain and longer ones out to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Cycle out from Fort William to the most westerly mainland point of the British Isles. Pass through friendly crofting townships scattered along the shores of the great western seaboard lochs. Find out more information in our routes pages.
Fort William offers the perfect base with good restaurants, nightlife and shops, along with award winning bike shops with years of experience.
And if you fancy a break from cycling why not try skiing, canyoning, climbing, walking, riding or one of many other of the activities available in the area both inside and out.
So why come to Lochaber? Because if you don't you just won't know what you're missing!
